Things to Do
Looking to explore the great outdoors this summer? Look no further!
Day 1:
Arrive at the hotel and check in from 3pm. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon in our courtyard. With covered and heated seating available, it’s perfect no matter the weather. If you’d prefer to stretch your legs after the drive, the campus of the University of Limerick is just across the road from our entrance (3-minute walk). The leafy walkways and riverside paths are ideal for unwinding and getting your holiday off to a relaxing start. We would recommend allowing for an hour to an hour and a half for a good stroll around campus. When you’re back, visit our Brasserie and enjoy some delicious home cooked food and why not a cocktail to celebrate the beginning of your break away.
Day 2:
After a great night’s sleep, enjoy your breakfast in McLaughlin’s Restaurant, available until 10am on weekdays, 10.30am on weekends and bank holidays. While the buffet may look a little different with a staff member attending to it, rest assured that all your favourite breakfast items are available to you.
The hotel is ideally located less than 30 minutes from the scenic town of Killaloe. Take the M7 to Junction 27 and follow the signs to Killaloe/Ballina. Once you arrive in the historic riverside town, you’ll be spoiled for choice for cozy coffee shops, restaurants and plenty of outdoor seating along the River Shannon. We recommend the Wooden Spoon for some delicious coffee and home baked treats.
If you are in the mood for a hike, there are some great peaks locally that are suitable for climbers of all abilities. Our favourites are Moylussa or Tountinna.
Moylussa is County Clare’s highest point and the hike takes about three hours at a walking pace. It is of a moderate difficulty level with some steep sections towards the end. However, the views on to Lough Derg and the surrounding area make it so worth it. You can access the start of the hike from the park at Twomilegate, just a couple of minutes outside Killaloe town.
Tountinna is on the Tipperary side of Lough Derg. If you’re not into hill walking but you still want to get some photos for Instagram, you can actually reach the peak by car. There’s a turn off between Ballina and Portroe that will lead you straight to the top where you’ll find picnic benches to take in the view of Clare, Tipperary, Limerick and Galway on a clear day. However if you’d prefer to stretch your legs, the best way to enjoy it is by ascending from the Graves of the Leinster Men. This is a loop of about six kilometres and should take about two hours.
After your day of outdoor pursuits, unwind in our Leisure Centre where, as our guest, you enjoy complimentary access to the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. Perfect for soothing any aching muscles!
Day 3:
For your last day away, we highly recommend exploring more of what the local area has to offer. A relaxing way to wind up your holiday would be the Killaloe River Cruise. They provide one hour guided tours of the River Shannon and Lough Derg. Your guide will point out all the interesting scenery as you glide by on the calm waters. The boat has two decks offering comfort in all weathers and a fully stocked bar. It’s also dog friendly which is an added bonus if you’ve brought your furry friend along on holidays.
We love sharing our recommendations and local knowledge with our guests. If you have any questions on things to do locally during your stay, don’t hesitate to reach out or ask our team when you arrive. We are always more than happy to help!
